Tuesday Tips: Resume Magic: Three Apps with Tricks for Success
In such a digital age, you are both encouraged and expected to be proficient in several software applications across many industries, from consulting to computer engineering. No, we’re not telling you to know all Microsoft apps like the back of your hand, or master coding in Python. We’re instead going to teach you how easy things like resume building can be when you familiarize yourself with popular applications, websites, and programs that offer a world of possibilities in your self-expression.
Starting a resume from scratch can be intimidating. You’ve probably heard several different and even contradicting tips from friends, family, and even teachers. There are many right ways to construct your resume, so it can be difficult to decide which resume makeover works the best for you.
Canva
You’ve probably heard other students jokingly tell you that they have a degree in Canva. Although it sounds quite amusing, it’s a testament to how helpful Canva is to so many students as they progress both through and after their undergraduate degrees. Canva is the jackpot for all things graphic design, with the potential to create flyers, slideshows, books, and in our case, resumes.
canva.com/resumes is your one-stop shop for unique and eye-catching resume templates. Canva will make you an expert at creating fresh, modern, and creative content without much skill required. You’ll also find much ease in Canva’s drag-and-drop options, along with fonts, colors, layouts, and even images that you can combine to create your vibe.
Canva is a great way to make resume building fun, but try to stick to professional and simple colors unless you’re applying for a more creative role. Many resumes nowadays are not reviewed by humans and may be pushed aside if the computer fails to recognize abnormal fonts and colors. Follow the templates on Canva to get an idea of what you should aim for.
Grammarly
Grammarly.com utilizes AI to provide you with your virtual writing assistant. Apply it as your browser extension to watch the magic unfold. You’ll quickly see that it stretches beyond the horizons of simple spelling and punctuation errors. As you type, Grammarly can check for tone and clarity to help you sound as confident and articulate as possible in your resume, cover letters, and even emails.
Rezi
Rezi.ai is an AI-based resume builder that helps you word bullet-pointed phrases to sound clean, professional, and friendly toward applicant tracking systems (ATS). If you’re unsure how to phrase certain tasks or experiences in ways that sound productive, professional, and hireable, give Rezi your job title and information to allow it to fill in the gaps for you.
Rezi is also efficient in formatting your resume to pass software scans, so that you don’t have to worry about getting rejected over improper fonts or columns. If you don’t know where to start or you’re applying for the first time, Rezi can be a good helping hand to get you off the ground.
You’re Ready to Go!
Resumes can be a pain if you’re starting from the ground up and don’t have the right tools. After reading this, though, you now have three stellar applications that are easy to use and excited to help you. Just like them, we’re rooting for your success!
If you’ve already built a resume, try applying one of these tools to it for potential improvements. Try a new style with Canva, clean up punctuation with Grammarly, or find new ways to phrase your experiences with Rezi.
